I was drawn to Naturopathic Medicine after experiencing a health crisis in my early 20s. I had just come off birth control and I lost my cycle for a year, experienced serious fatigue and digestive issues, and no longer felt like myself. When the medical system was unable to offer me any real answers, I visited a Naturopath who helped me uncover the key to my wide assortment of symptoms: hypothyroidism. Instead of sending me home with three different pharmaceutical prescriptions, he created a treatment plan for me that included nutritional counselling, supplementation, and acupuncture, along with other natural therapies. Within six months of working with my Naturopath, I went from feeling awful every day to experiencing the best health of my life.
With that, I was hooked.
I pursued a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, seeking out training in additional modalities along the way to broaden my knowledge and fill my naturopathic toolbox.
My first doctor’s appointment after discovering that I was pregnant with my first daughter was less than ideal. In one word, it was awful. In fact, all of my experiences throughout my pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum within the medical system felt cold and clinical. At times I felt brushed aside or dismissed, even as I desperately sought information that would help me experience a healthier pregnancy, relieve symptoms that disrupted my ability to function, or get back to myself again after giving birth.
These experiences made me realize that there is currently a huge gap in healthcare around maternal care, particularly for postpartum women — and my determination to fill that gap with well-rounded, evidence-based care was the driving force that led me to focus my practice on preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum care. All mothers deserve to feel well, because when you feel well, everything is possible!
